Biographical/Historical Information

Jacques Offenbach was born in Cologne in 1819, the son of a synagogue cantor. He was trained as a cellist at the Paris Conservatoire and then performed at the Opéra-Comique and other establishments. Offenbach developed an early career as a cello virtuoso and composed works for his instrument. In 1850 he became conductor at the Théâtre Français, before renting his own theater five years later, where he presented his own light-hearted stage works. Jacques Offenbach devoted his career largely to operettas and opéras comiques; he died in Paris in 1880.
