Biographical/Historical Information
Max Porges von Portheim was born in Prague in 1857, the son of the industrialist Wilhelm Porges von Portheim and his wife Bertha Goldsmith. He studied chemistry, agriculture, philosophy, and history at the universities of Prague and Halle, without completing his studies. Portheim moved to Vienna in 1893 and devoted his life to the studies of Habsburg Emperor Joseph II. (son of Maria Theresa, 1765-1790), collecting a big array of documents, publications, memorabilia, etc. Max von Portheim died in Vienna in 1937.
