Biographical/Historical Information

The violinist Bronisław Huberman (born in Częstochowa, Poland in 1882) was one of the greatest virtuosi in his time. In 1936, he founded the Palestine Symphony Orchestra (later, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra), giving refuge to scores of Jewish musicians and their families in Nazi-occupied Europe. The orchestra’s opening concert was conducted in Tel Aviv by Arturo Toscanini on Dec. 25, 1936.
