Biographical/Historical Information

Berthold Rosenthal was born in Liedolsheim, Baden, in 1875, the son of a cattle dealer. He studied in Karlsruhe to teach in grammar schools, which he did mostly in Manheim until he lost his license in 1933. Rosenthal also wrote for the journal ‘Volksschulwarte’; he was active in Jewish charitable organizations; and he wrote a book, “Heimatgeschichte der badischen Juden’, which preserved much knowledge about Jews in Baden. In 1940, Rosenthal and his wife Johanna née Benzian emigrated to New York, where they joined their daughters Ruth, and Lotte (a son, Ernst, had escaped to Palestine). Berthold Rosenthal died in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1957.
