Biographical/Historical Information

In 1851, Orthodox Jews created their own congregation in Frankfurt/M. under the leadership of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-1888), in opposition to liberal mainstream Judaism. A new synagogue was inaugurated on Schützenstraße in 1852 in a neo-Gothic style by the architect and carpenter J. W. Renk and with generous financial contributions by the Rothschild family and other donors, also including a schoolhouse and a 'mikveh'. This Synagogue was replaced with a new one at Friedberger Anlage in 1907.
