The American rabbi Stephen Samuel Wise was born in Budapest in 1874; he and his family emigrated to the U.S. soon after. Wise was an early supporter of “Progressive Judaism” and political Zionism. He served in congregations in Oregon and New York. Stephen Wise died in New York in 1949.
