Biographical/Historical Information
The art dealer Paul Cassirer was born in Görlitz, Saxony in 1871. Together with his cousin Bruno Cassirer, they opened an art gallery in Berlin and became active in the Berlin Secession. Paul was also engaged in supporting Impressionist art, specifically the work of Vincent Van Gogh. Cassirer was married in a second marriage to the actress Tilla Durieux; he committed suicide during divorce procedures in 1926.
The sculptor Georg Kolbe was born in Waldheim, Saxony in 1877. First trained as a painter and having joined the Berlin Secession, he later began sculpting in a modern, yet classical style, which made him one of the most outstanding modern artists in Germany. Georg Kolbe died in Berlin in 1947.
