The rabbi and historian Hugo Steinthal was born in Saarbrücken on July 27, 1893. After having been injured in World War I, Steinthal studied history and philosophy in Freiburg, Munich, and Breslau, where he graduated in 1921. He was rabbi in Saarbrücken until his emigration to France in 1935. Hugo Steinthal died in Saarbrücken in 1961.
