Biographical/Historical Information

Margarete Susman was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1872, but grew up in Zürich, Switzerland. Since her father forbade her to study at the university, she turned to writing, drawing and painting, learning arts in ateliers in Paris, Düsseldorf and Munich. In 1901 Susman’s first book of poetry was published. In 1905 Margarete Susman married the painter Eduard von Bendemann and the couple moved to Berlin. She continued to write poetry as well as texts on literature and philosophy. After returning to Zurich in 1934, Susman resided in Switzerland for the rest of her life and continued to write books and essays in spite of failing eyesight in her later years. Margarete Susman died in Switzerland in 1966.
