Biographical/Historical Information
The German Jewish author Karl Wolfskehl - born in Darmstadt in 1869 - wrote poetry, prose, and drama. In the early 20th century, he was a central personality in the literary and artistic life of Munich, associating with writers (Rainer Maria Rilke and Thomas Mann); artists (Paul Klee, Alfred Kubin); and philosophers (Martin Buber). He also worked as a translator, working with French, English, Italian, Hebrew, Latin, and Middle High German texts. Wolfskehl left Nazi Germany in 1933 for Switzerland and then Italy, and settled 1938 in New Zealand, where he died in 1948.
