Biographical/Historical Information
Max Kreutzberger, born in Königshütte, Germany (Chorzów, Poland) in 1900, studied philosophy, history, and political economics, and dedicated himself to Jewish social work. He was head of the social policy department of the Zentralwohlfahrtstelle der deutschen Juden (Central Welfare Agency for German Jews) and became head of the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden in 1933. From 1935 to 1948, he lived in Palestine, being instrumental in Hitachduth Olej Germania, an organization of Jews from Germany. After a sojourn in Germany as Director of the Jewish Agency, he went to New York, where he became Director of the Leo Baeck Institute in 1957. Max Kreutzberger died in Locarno, Switzerland in 1978.
