Biographical/Historical Information

The physicist and Nobel laureate Albert Abraham Michelson was born in the Prussian town of Strelno (Strzelno, Poland) in 1852; he was two years old, when his family emigrated to the United States. Michelson was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1869, before studying in Berlin and Heidelberg, as well as at the Collège de France and École Polytechnique in Paris. He then taught physics in Cleveland, Ohio; Worcester, MA; and in Chicago. In 1907, Michelson became the first American scientist to receive a Nobel prize. Albert. A. Michelson died in Pasadena, CA in 1931.
