Biographical/Historical Information

The pharmacologist Otto Loewi was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1873. He was a professor in Graz (1909—1938) and then at the College of Medicine at New York University (1940—1961). Loewi investigated the chemical transmission of nerve impulses, for which he shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Sir Henry Dale in 1936. Otto Loewi died in New York in 1961.
