Biographical/Historical Information
The novelist André Schwarz-Bart was born in Metz, France in 1928, the son of Yiddish-speaking emigrants. When his parents were deported to Auschwitz in 1941, Schwarz-Bart joined the French resistance. His best known novel “Le dernier des justes” (“The last of the just)” was published in 1959. André Schwarz-Bart died in Guadeloupe in 2006.
