Biographical/Historical Information

The chemist Richard Willstätter was born in Karlsruhe in 1872. He studied and worked in Munich, Zurich, and in Berlin, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1915. In 1924, Willstätter resigned “as a gesture against increasing antisemitism” from his position in Munich, but he emigrated to Switzerland as late as 1939. Richard Willstätter died in Locarno in 1942.
