After graduating from the University of Hamburg in 1921, Strauss worked at the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin, and he was also engaged with the German Zionist movement, which brought him in contact with German Jewish intellectuals. After sojourns in Paris and England, Straus emigrated to the U.S. in 1937, eventually teaching at The New School in New York, at the University of Chicago, and at other colleges.
