Biographical/Historical Information

The Bengali author, poet, philosopher, composer, and painter Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta in 1861. He first published his poems at age 16, and he eventually reformed Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art. He also was a humanist, universalist, and fierce anti-nationalist, promoting India’s independence from Britain. In 1913, Tagore was the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Rabindranath Tagore died in Calcutta in 1941.
