Biographical/Historical Information
The author Jakob Wassermann was born in Fuerth, Germany on March 10, 1873. He worked as a journalist in Germany and in Switzerland, before publishing his first novel ‘Melusine’ in 1896. He then moved to Austria where he lived alternatively in Vienna and in the spa-town Altaussee. Wassermann's work included poetry, essays, novels, and short stories. His most acclaimed works are the novel ‘Der Fall Maurizius’ (1928) and his autobiography, ‘Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude’ (My Life as a German and a Jew; 1921). Jakob Wassermann died in Altaussee on January 1, 1934.
