Biographical/Historical Information
The physician Marta Fraenkel was born in Cologne in 1896 but grew up in Frankfurt after the death of her parents. She studied medicine in Bonn and Frankfurt, receiving her medical degree from the University of Frankfurt in 1923. Until 1935, she worked for medical institutions in Düsseldorf and Dresden. She was married to the editor in chief of “Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten”, Theodor Schulze from 1931 to 1935. After a sojourn in Brussels, she emigrated to New York City in 1938. She lived briefly in Washington, D.C. as a medical advisor for the Social Security administration. Marta Fraenkel died in New York City in 1976. In her honor an exhibition room was named after her at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden.
The photographer Genja Jonas was born in Rogasen, Silesia in 1895 and opened her own studio in Dresden in ca. 1918. She was one of the most prominent portraitists in Dresden and participated in many international photo exhibitions. From 1925 until her death in 1938 (cancer) she was married to the author and editor at ‘Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten’, Alfred Günther. Genja Jonas’ parents perished in the Holocaust.
