Biographical/Historical Information
The author, historian, and editor Julie Braun née Vogelstein was born in Stettin, Germany (Szczecin, Poland) in 1883, the daughter of the Reform Rabbi Heinemann Vogelstein (1841 - 1911). After studying art history and Egyptology and graduating from the University of Heidelberg, she worked as a secretary for the German social-democratic politician Heinrich Braun (1854–1927), whom she married after the death of his first wife, the feminist, socialist politician Lily Braun (1865–1916). Julie Braun-Vogelstein left Germany for France in 1935 and then immigrated to the United States, where she worked in California as an author and editor; she also was a member of the board of the Leo Baeck Institute. Julie Braun-Vogelstein died in New York City in 1971.
