Biographical/Historical Information

The German writer, historian, and journalist Johannes Urzidil was born and educated in Prague, Bohemia. After serving briefly in World War I in 1916, he worked as a translator at the German embassy in Prague and as a correspondent for the Prague Tagblatt (daily newspaper). He was dismissed from his position as press officer of the German embassy in 1933, and together with his wife Gertrude Thieberger (1898-1977) they escaped to England via Italy and then moved to the United States in 1941. Johannes Urzidil died in Rome in 1970.
