Biographical/Historical Information

The German journalist, film critic, and screenwriter Willy Haas (1933-1956) was editor of the newspaper for literature, art and culture, “Die Welt im Wort”.

The dramatist and author Paul Kornfeld was born in Prague in 1889. He became well known in Berlin for his expressionist plays. Paul Kornfeld died in the Ghetto of Litzmannstadt (Łódź) in 1942.

The philosopher Emil Utitz was born in Bohemia in 1883. He taught at universities in Halle and Prague and published mainly about aesthetics. In 1942 he was interned in the concentration camp at Theresienstadt. After the war, Utitz published a book about “Psychology of life in Theresienstadt”. Emil Utitz died in Jena in 1956.

Artist, book illustrator, and educator Hugo Steiner-Prag was born in Prague in 1880. He embarked on his career in Munich, taught in his own schools for graphic design in Prague and in Stockholm, and finally continued his career in the U.S. Hugo Steiner-Prag died in New York City in 1945.
