Biographical/Historical Information
The Polish author, poet, and novelist Józef Wittlin was born in Galicia in 1896. At the outbreak of World War I, he moved to Vienna and completed his studies; together with his friend Joseph Roth he joined the Austrian army in 1916. Wittlin spent the 1920s and 1930s in Lodz and in Warsaw, together with his wife Halina née Handelsmann.
