Biographical/Historical Information

Samuel Liepmann Löwen was born in Potsdam in 1747. He was a relative of the banker Daniel Itzig and worked for the Itzig banking business in Berlin and Koenigsberg. Samuel Löwen was the father of Rosa Valentin; he died in Berlin in 1827.

The painter Joseph Friedrich August Darbes was born in Hamburg in 1747. He studied in Copenhagen and then practiced in St. Petersburg for many years, painting the most prominent members of the Imperial Russian family. Joseph Darbes died in Berlin in 1810.

The oil painting belonged to Kg. Rat a.d. Martin Valentin in Munich, Germany.
