Biographical/Historical Information

Court Jews of the Hungarian Magnate family Batthyány settled in the town of Schlaining (Stadtschlaining) in the late 17th century. With the emancipation of Jews in Austria-Hungary in the 19th century, most Jewish families moved to nearby larger communities. The synagogue was restored into a memorial for Jews in Burgenland in the early 21st century.
