Biographical/Historical Information

The new, main synagogue in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia was built in a neo-Byzantine Style with an Art-Nouveaux interior in 1912, designed by the architect Edmund Körner. It was severely burnt and damaged during Kristallnacht and re-designed as a “house of Jewish culture” in the early 21st century.
