Konrad Adenauer was the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) from 1949 to 1963. Beginning in 1952 under his active leadership, West Germany initiated the process of paying restitution to survivors of the Holocaust and reparations to the State of Israel.
