Biographical/Historical Information

The journalist and author Ernst G. (Gottfried) Lowenthal was born in Cologne in 1904. He was a learned economist but spent his time and his career for the benefit of the Jewish community in Germany, such as being an editor and consultant to the “Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens” since 1929 and to its successor organization, the “Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden” since 1933. From 1939 to 1946, he lived in London, working for Jewish refugees’ organizations, and afterwards resuming his work for Jews in Germany in various capacities, like being an academic advisor to the Leo Baeck Institute in London. Ernst Lowenthal died in Berlin in 1994.
