Biographical/Historical Information

Handbag had been owend by Grete Lebach, née Weilheimer. Grete had likely carried this when she immigrated to the United States in 1939. Paper items from the handbag seem to have been separated and kept with the Lebach Wilheimer Family Collection, AR 25050, Box: 1, Folder: 2. These paper items are digitized.

Grete Lebach was born Grete Weilheimer on February 28, 1910 to Martin Weilheimer (1877-1961) and his wife Ida. She was confirmed into the Jewish religious community of Nurnberg in 1924. In 1939, she immigrated via Cuba to the United States, where she met her husband Erich Lebach (1905 - 1988). He had already emigrated in 1936 and worked as the manager of a shirt retail business, Lebach-Hagen Shirt Co. Grete’s parents immigrated to the United States in 1941 with Erich’s support. Grete and Erich Lebach had two daughters, Dorothy and Joan.
