    Portrait shows an older woman wearing a dark striped dress with a white lace collar and a shawl. She also wears a white bonnet which has lace decorations framing her face. She has dark smooth hair, parted in the middle. She sits at three-quarters angle but faces the viewer. A companion portrait to this piece showing the sitter's husband, Zadok Löb Dörzbacher-Koch, can be found at call number 2003.56

  • Provenance

    The painting was owned at one time by Eugen Fellheim, owner of an optical business named Gebrüder Koch in Stuttgart. It is very likely that the store must have been owned previously by the sons of Blümle and Zadok Dörzbacher-Koch. After Eugen and Rosa Fellheim's death, the painting hung in the home of Dr. Walter and Marie Denison and was then shipped from Switzerland to their son in the United States.

Biographical/Historical Information

Blümle Dörzbacher-Koch (1786-1856), née Sontheimer, was the paternal great-grandmother of Albert Einstein's mother, Pauline Einstein, née Koch.
