Biographical/Historical Information

This painting (in addition to 2004.26b) was commissioned by the sitter's family to commemorate their 25th wedding anniversary.

Louis Steinberg was born in 1857 in the village of Wallensen in Lower Saxony. His father Ephraim was a banker and grain trader. In the 1880's Louis moved to Hanover and bought the Hannoversche Dampfziegelei (brick factory) and later the Duniger Steinzeug & Towaren Fabriken...Louis was very involved in Jewish affairs and became early on a Vorstandsmitglied of the Hannover Jewish community. He was the coporate secretary and board member of Juedische Gartenbauschule Ahlem. He was also an early supporter of B'nai B'rith Kinderheim Norderney and the children's summer camp in Salzhemmendorf near his birth place Wallensen. Louis Steinberg died in July 1921 in Hanover.
