Biographical/Historical Information
Hale Meyer (née) Landau was born in 1741. She married Levi Meyer in 1766 and had four children. She was the mother of the Jewish educator Samuel Meyer Ehrenberg. She possibly resided in Frankfurt am Main during her life and died in Wolfenbuettel in 1818.
The inscription engraved on the back of the frame (not a signature), gives the name of the painter as: "I.Schroeder, Maler." Since there seems to be no painter by that name active in 1815, if the inscription is correct, it suggests the hand of a goldsmith, Johannes Wilhelm Schroeder, 1784-1847, who worked in Lubeck.
