    Kafka is represented as older than the usual likeness, known from photographs. The emphasis on the deep eye sockets and the structural planes of the face, suggest an expression of tragic withdrawal, somewhat reminiscent of Medieval popular sculpture.

Biographical/Historical Information

Franz Kafka was a Prague-born Jewish modernist writer. Most of his German-language works were published posthumously. He died in 1924 of tuberculosis.

Dan Kulka (1938-1979) was a Czechoslovakia-born sculptor, though he was mainly active in Canada. He was trained in Prague and later taught at the College of Art in Toronto. In 1970 he emigrated to Israel.
