Biographical/Historical Information
The family physician Gottschalk van Geldern, the maternal grandfather of the poet Heinrich Heine, was born in Düsseldorf in 1726, the son of the protected Jew Lazarus van Geldern and his wife Sara Lea née Preßburg. He was also president of the Jewish community in the German Duchy of Jülich-Berg. Gottschalk van Geldern died in Düsseldorf in 1795.
