Biographical/Historical Information

Eduard Julius Friedrich Bendemann was a painter, best known for his biblical works and portraits. Bendemann was born in 1811 in Berlin to Jewish parents who converted to Christianity. He studied at the University of Art in Berlin under Wilhelm von Schadow and attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He traveled to Italy with other artists and studied Raphael and Michelangelo. After traveling, over a number of years but settled in Düsseldorf, working as a freelance painter.In 1835, he married a daughter of Gottfried Schadow. Bendemann taught at Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden from 1838 to 1859 and then served at the director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy for a number of years before resigning due to health-related issues in 1867.
