Biographical/Historical Information

The painter Maxim Kopf was born in Vienna, but grew up in Prague, where he founded a group of German speaking artists and where he participated in the Prague Secession. After traveling in Tahiti he lived in Paris, and after long periods of internment in France and its colonies he immigrated to the United States in 1941. Living in New York, Kopf married the American journalist and political writer Dorothy Thompson and built his reputation as an artist through a one person show in October of 1947 and other exhibitions. Maxim Kopf died in New York in 1958.
