Biographical/Historical Information

Bernard Picart was a French, Protestant designer and engraver, born in Paris on June 11, 1673 and died in Amsterdam on May 8, 1733. He received his earliest training from his father, Etienne Picart, as well as from the painters Le Brun and Jouvenet. From an early age, Picart showed a marked talent to imitate the great masters. In 1710 he settled in Amsterdam, where he supplied plates and engravings to printers and book-sellers. Picart designed and executed a vast number of plates, of which about 1,300 are still extant; many depict Biblical topics, but there also is a variety of other subjects.
