Biographical/Historical Information

Isidor Aschheim was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was born in Posen in 1891 and raised in an Orthodox Jewish household. After serving in World War I, Aschheim studied under Otto Mueller in Breslau from 1919 to 1923. He was also influenced by Erich Heckel of Die Brücke. In 1940, Aschheim emigrated to Mandatory Palestine (now Israel). He married the painter Margot Lange in 1945. While living in Jerusalem, Aschheim taught at Bezalel School of Art and eventually served as its director.
