Biographical/Historical Information
Rabbi Salomon Leib Rapoport was born in Lemberg (Lviv), Galicia (now Ukraine) on June 1st, 1790. He spent his life as a Jewish scholar, and rabbi. He became the rabbi of Tarnopol in 1837, and the chief rabbi of Prague in 1840. He was one of the founders of the “Wissenschaft des Judentums” movement, which was dedicated to the academic study of Jewish texts and origins. He aided in the writing of an encyclopedia, and wrote numerous biographies. He died October 16, 1867.
Ignác Josef Porges was a portraitist born in Jevičko na Moravě and active in Prague.
