Biographical/Historical Information

Heinz Herbert Liepmann was born on June 9, 1914 as Heinz Herbert Schmidt in Obernigk, Kreis Trebnitz. At the time of his birth his mother Johanna Schmidt was unmarried and he was therefore registered as Heinz Herbert Schmidt. As Johanna Schmidt was a Catholic, Heinz Herbert was baptized on June11, 1914. His Jewish father, Herbert Liepmann, was a medical student, who finally married Johanna Schmidt in 1919. Heinz Herbert Lipemann attended high school in Breslau and later studied medicine at the Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universitaet in Breslau. He moved to Czechoslovakia in 1935. Early in December 1938 Heinz Liepmann and his parents emigrated to the United States. They first arrived in New York, and later settled in Albany. On March 5, 1941 Heinz Liepmann was inducted into the US Army and was honorably discharged July 20, 1942. He received his US citizenship on June 2, 1943, and an Albany Business College diploma in February 1945. He then worked as a tax agent for the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance.
