Biographical/Historical Information

Heinrich Stahl was born in Berlin-Rudow on April 13, 1868. For much of his life, he worked as an insurance executive in Berlin, and he was also involved in Jewish communal affairs. In 1933 he was elected chairman of the Berlin Jewish Community and worked hard in assisting Berlin Jews to leave Germany, cooperating with many organizations, including the Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland. He was the last president of the organization. On June 11, 1942 Heinrich Stahl and his wife Jenny were deported to Theresienstadt, where he died that same year.

The photographer Hans Casparius was born in Berlin in 1900. After finishing his basic school education, he worked for a short while in his father’s textile business, but he soon embarked on his career in movies, first as an actor in silent movies, than as a producer of documentaries, and finally as a photographer. He became famous for his portraits of actors and personalities from German cultural life. He also excelled as a traveling photographer, depicting scenes in North-Africa, in Canada and Alaska, and finally in Palestine (1934). After the Nazis rise to power, Casparius settled in Vienna, before emigrating to London. Hans Casparius died in England in 1986.
