Biographical/Historical Information

The historian and librarian Alexander Marx (1878–1953) was born in Elberfeld, Germany. He grew up in Königsberg, East Prussia (Kaliningrad, Russia) and studied in Berlin at the university and at the Rabbiner-Seminar. He married Hannah Hoffmann, the daughter of Rabbi David Hoffmann, Rector of the seminary. Upon the invitation of Solomon Schechter, Marx taught history at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York and worked there as its librarian.
