Biographical/Historical Information

Dorothea (Dola) Gould, née Guttmann, was born on April 27, 1922 in Tilsit (Sovetsk, Russia), the daughter of Abraham Guttmann (October 24, 1874 in Schillehnen-March 26, 1963 in Montreal) and Feige Taube Guttmann, née Berlowitz, (January 4, 1879 - July 23, 1967). Dola had four brothers (Noah; Helmut (Koffel); Steven (Sally); and Heinz) and a sister, Gertrud: Heinz Guttmann emigrated to Rhodesia and then to England. Gertrud Guttmann was born September 8, 1905, she worked in a Jewish orphanage in Berlin and was deported to Auschwitz on May 17, 1943, where she perished.

Dorothea Dola Gould, née Guttmann and her parents emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1939. On August 7, 1960, Dola married Henry H. Goldschmidt Gould, a successful businessman in Montreal. Henry was born on July 15, 1914 in Berlin, Germany to Martin (1879 - 1944) and Paula Goldschmidt, née Harmelin (1880 - 1958). He had a sister, Ruth Augusta Beatrice Goldschmidt (1923 - 1958). Henry and Ruth were educated in private schools in Switzerland. He emigrated to New York prior to 1941 and then to Montreal. His parents and sister joined him in April 1941 in New York.

Dola and Henry Gould eventually settled in Switzerland. After Henry’s death (August 6, 1978), Dola dedicated a great part of her time and wealth to charity, such as supporting cultural and social causes in Israel. She died on June 8, 2003 in Zurich, Switzerland.
