Biographical/Historical Information
Rabbi Abraham Sutro was born near Erlangen in 1784. After studies in Fürth and in Prague, he was eventually appointed "Landesrabbiner" for the districts of Münster and Dortmund in 1815, and chief rabbi of the district of Paderborn in 1828. Sutro was an active advocate of the emancipation of the Jews in Prussia, and at the same time opposed to religious reforms. Abraham Sutro died in Münster in 1869.
