Biographical/Historical Information

The Russian-Jewish wood merchant Hermann (Lazar Hirsch) Judey was born in Riga, in circa 1878. He moved to Berlin, where he owned a successful lumber company. Judey was married to Russian-born Olga née Fischmann (1878-1929); they were the parents of the artist and illustrator Jacob Barosin. They also had three daughters, Lydia and Miriam (Mary), who separately escaped Nazi-Germany to France and then immigrated to the U.S.; as well as Sina Ida, who died under the Nazis in Berlin. Olga Judey died in Berlin in 1929. Hermann Judey remarried after Olga’s death; he died in New York in 1959.
