Biographical/Historical Information

Pesach (or Passover) Seder is a feast that begins the Jewish holiday of Pesach. The Seder involves a ritual where in family members retell the story of the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt (as documented in Exodus). The Haggadah is the text and service performed during the Seder, which include a number of customs and elements.

The owner of this plate was Steven Schwarzschild. Born in Frankfurt, Schwarzschild moved with his family in 1939 to New York City, where he attended high school. Later, he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Ordained a rabbi at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati in 1948, he served as a rabbi in both parts of Berlin and in East Germany from 1948 to 1950. He served Jewish congregations in Fargo, ND, and in Lynn, MA, from 1950 to 1964.
