Biographical/Historical Information

The son of Primator Wolf Popper, Joachim Hayim Popper (also Joachim Edler von Popper, 1730-1795) earned a fortune in commerce and established strong political connections with Bohemian nobility as well as the Habsburg government. Popper was a supplier to the Austrian army during the Seven Years' War and by the 1780's he had amassed enough wealth to establish a currency exchange in Vienna. He also consolidated his family's position in the tobacco trade by becoming a partner in the first pan-Austrian Jewish tobacco firm. From 1772-1792 Popper held the position of community head and was ennobled by the emperor in 1790.
