Biographical/Historical Information

An amulet is an object worn to protect its owner from evil, cure him/her from disease, or even as an aid to greater wisdom. They were frequently used by women during childbirth. They can be made of metal to be worn around the neck or wrist, or printed on paper and carried in the pocket. Jewish amulets can contain text that is a combination of the Divine Name, an angel's name, and biblical verses. The use of amulets was very popular in kabbalistic circles.
