    Silver colored circular medal. Recto: Robed Grecian female figure holding a cornucopia in one hand and pouring liquid on a raised platform. Artist's hallmark "CS" in lower right. Text, "Edel sei der Mensch, hilfreich und gut" from the first lines of Goethe's "Das Göttliche" on either side of the figure.

    Verso: Wreath at top and bear at bottom, text in center: "Fuer opferwillige Hilfeleistung an ihren Mitbuergern in schwerer Kriegszeit, die Stadt Berlin." It is housed in a square box with satin and velvet linings.

Biographical/Historical Information

The medal was awarded for emergency aid efforts during World War I in Berlin, possibly as part of the Hindenburg Programme.

Constantin Starck was a sculptor and medalist, born 1866 in Riga. He began his studies at the Stuttgart Art Academy in 1885, then at the Berlin Academy of Art in 1887, and later under Reinhold Begas until 1898. Starck was a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts and taught for a period of time at the Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums Berlin.
