Biographical/Historical Information
The author and teacher Gustav Weinberg was born in Gersfeld, Germany in 1856. After working in an unfulfilling world of business, he began his studies at universities in Berlin, Heidelberg and Strasbourg; spent time studying in England; and received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg in 1884 with his dissertation “Das französische Schäferspiel in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts” [The French pastoral play in the first half of the 17th century], which was later published. He worked as a teacher – among others at the “Philanthropin: in Frankfurt/Main -, but an academic career remained barred because he was a Jew. He also wrote for various newspapers, and he was an official interpreter of French and English for German courts. Some of his non-fiction and dramatic works were printed, but his poetry remained unpublished.
